The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students, who are matriculated in a combined MD/PhD or other dual-doctoral degree training program (. DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), and who intend careers as physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists.
If the applicant has been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence, the appropriate item should be checked on the face page of the application. Applicants who have applied for and have not yet been granted admission as a permanent resident should check the Permanent Resident block on the face page of the PHS 966-6 application, and should also write in the word "pending." A notarized statement documenting legal admission for permanent residence must be submitted prior to the issuance of an award.
The applicant must be currently enrolled in a . or equivalent research degree program in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences. Before activation of the award, the individual must have received an . doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution and been admitted to candidacy for the . at the applicant institution.

The applicant must be at the dissertation research stage of training at the time of award and must show evidence of high academic performance in the sciences, and commitment to a career as an independent research scientist.
